Tom Blinn wrote back, briefly pointing out that the CD-ROM might indeed
have something to do with the IDE bus hang... As this was the only IDE
device in the box, which was gratefully provided with cables for both IDE
channels, I in fact had a spare cable to try. I removed the existing cable
and swapped in the unused one (freeing up some ventillation space inside,
as well).
It booted first try.
The "waiting for pka0.7.0.14.0 to poll..." message at the top of the boot
is also gone. Putting media in the CD nixes the dqa "no media" errors,
as expected.
Still a somewhat unnerving fix. I'll be monitoring the logs closely.
