Further question on the clearing port of Jonathan Williams

My situation:

A multi-home server with 2 network cards, 1 is Ethernet and other is FDDI and
our deployed application software. Each NIC is hooked to a separate network.
A number of Workstation clients using the Ethernet only and a no of clients
using the FDDI and all installed with the application client.

Problem: sometimes all the app clients on the FDDI Workstations suddenly stopped
(died) with the error message complaining about the ports or heartbeats, ...
BUT the all the app clients on the Ethernet Workstations still were running fine
talking with the multi-home server.

We guess that the ports on the multi-home server were blocked on the FDDI
network that is why all the WS hooked to the FDDI network died BUT all the WS
hooked to the Ethernet network still worked.

Our questions:
When ports are blocked, all the clients should die, does not matter whether this
client is connected Ethernet network or Fddi network. Is it correct ?
Are the ports of ethernet different from the ports of Fddi ?

In the mean time, I will follow the instructions from all who replied to
Jonathan Williams' clearing port to fix the problem.
