tar interoperability question

We're trying to send a large file (> 8Gb) using tar to a customer who wants
to read it on a Sun Microsystems Solaris system. (We're using Tru64 Unix
V5.1A) In order to create a tape with a file this large, we used the -E
switch in the tar command, but unfortunately, Sun's version of tar
apparently does not support this option. (So says the customer we sent the
tape to!)

Does anyone out there have a suggestion? Ideas we've had include using gnu
tar (we had some compatability problems with this approach years ago, but
it may be the way to go) or the Unix split command (is it available under
Solaris, and is it compatable?).

Ideas or suggestions are welcome!

thanks and regards,
