SUMMARY:upgrade migration pain

        Thanks to everyone who responded on this issue, too many to mention.

        What I concluded is that migration across the major version ( 4.xx
to 5.xx ) is not going to be practical to do on the variety of hardware
configurations that I have to deal with. Complicating the situation is that
the machines I will be working with are scattered all over the world and I
can't get to the consoles. Compaq recommends a fresh start install when
going to another major version, and I have to agree.

        Instead, I will use scripts that save out and restore node-specfic
files, and since my console operator will be remote, and probably not
skilled in UNIX, I have decided to create cdf files to perform the first
part of the upgrade, up to the point where I can log on over the network and
finish them up.
