SUMMARY: Memory Configuration

Thanks to Dr Thomas Blinn, Rob Leadbetter and Nick Hill for their replies.
Dr Tom's reply is below, but the general consensus and after most of the day
trying different things out is that i will have to take the server down and
open it up to determine exactly what is inside, or at least get to the
console mode.

Thanks again

Steve

"consvar" almost certainly doesn't tell you. The information might
be reported at system boot time, in which case it should be in the
messages log file at /var/adm/messages, or it might be present in
the binary error log file (Compaq Analyze aka "ca" should be able
to report it if it's in there). The "sys_check" script may have a
way to get this and report it. And last but not least, it's possible
that "vmstat -P" (the physical memory report) will display it. But
on some platforms, the console firmware doesn't export the info in a
way that the kernel understands, so the data may not be there for
any of the standard UNIX utilities (or the kernel itself) to report.
I simply don't know whether for your platforms an interface to give
the data to the kernel actually exists. It is quite likely that you
will have to shut down and get into the console to find out.

Hi All,

Is there are quick an easy way to tell you the configuration of the memory
on a system i.e whether the Dims are 256, 512, 1Gb etc..., the number that
you have and the slots that they are in on the memory card - without
actually having to take the system down and open it up? Is it possible to
use Constar to get this info?

Version 5.1a - Alpha system ES40 and ES45's

Thanks in advance

Steve Copper
