Thanks to all for the many good ideas. Heres what I did:
Original situation:
RA7000 hsz70 raid moved from a 2100 to an ES40. I was using 4.0E.
Old boot drive was rz44, new system sees it as rz12

Booted CD, jumped to Unix Shell
ran /sbin/advfs/advscan -r rz12 to create temp advfs domains,
domain_rz12a, domain_rz12g
mounted domain_rz12a on /mnt
went to /mnt/etc/fdmns and changed all the drive links to what they are
on the new system.
edited fstab to point swap in the right place, checked /sbin/swapdefault
too.
Went to the /dev dir and removed all the old devices (rmt, nrmt, rrz, rz)
ran MAKEDEV for all my new device numbers
rebooted genvmunix, did bcheckrc which mounted all my drives,
did doconfig to create new kernal, then booted the new kernal.
Then I configed the gened config file for maxusers and maxuprc and rebuilt
the kernal.

The only 2 problems I had was 4.0e didn't support the newer ethernet
crontollers of the ES40, so I had to pull the old one out of the 2100 and
install it in the ES40. And the tape drive had a scsi conflict, so I had
to change its address from 6 to 4.
