changing from fta0 to alt0

We have a GS-140 running UNIX 5.1. We have a 100MBt FDDI for network
connection. This machine also has a GIG FDDI unused. I would like to
experiment with the GIG connection. After getting the cable connection from
networking team, how do I change from fta0 to alt0 (both now showing up in
ifconfig -a)? Can I simply change fta0 to alt0 in /etc/rc.config, bring down
the machine, change cables and reboot? Is there anything else that needs to
be done?

I eventually want to move this GIG card to a production machine (also a
GS-140 and UNIX 5.1) which currently has only a 100MBt FDDI. Would I be able
to copy the alt0 line from /sys/conf/HOSTNAME of the other machine to this
machine's HOSTNAME file, rebuild kernel and reboot? Is there anything else
involved?

thanks
SS
