Thanks to all who responded. I'm new to this community and never
expected this level of response.

My problem of "too many users logged in" when trying to connect was
linked to a bug in OpenSSH 3.4.p1. The fix was to add "#define
BROKEN_FD_PASSING" to the config.h file--after having run configure and
prior to running make install. Thanks to Steven Dowdy for pointing this
out.

In the end, there were no licensing issues involved. I must say I'm
much more intimate with lmf after this.
