SUMMARY: Alpha 2100 upgrade question

The question was: How do I upgrade an Alphaserver 2100 to use EV5.6
or higher cpus to be able to run Oracle 8.1.7 or higher

Thanks to all who responded. The majority seemed to think that a cpu
upgrade path to the EV5.6 and beyond doesn't exist for the 2100. I
have included a selection of the responses

There aren't any EV 5.6 chips available for the 2100. The 5/300 (21164)
is
the latest you can use.

Here's a link on Compaq's web site that lists all options:
http://www.compaq.com/products/quickspecs/SOC/QB0025PF.PDF

It seems to me someone on this mailing list once said that you can get
Oracle to run under some kind of EV 5.6 emulation, but it's very slow.

I had a client who had this very same problem. Apparently there is no
EV5.6
chip for the Alpha 2100. The technology is too old. My client had to
down
grade or reinstall Oracle at version 8.1.6. That release worked on the
Alpha 2100.

I believe the 375Mhz cpu is a EV56.

I can recall reading a doco our DBA'S had about Oracle 8 needing
cpu(s) higher than 300MHz. There is more info at
http://www.compaq.com/products/quickspecs/SOC/QB003OMW.DOC about what
the
system can be upgraded to. Hope this helps..
