Upgrad From OSIS 5.4 To 5.9?

Hi Managers,
 
I have 5.1 with OSIS 5.4 and I need to upgrade it to OSIS 5.9 to take
the advantage of new LDAP on 5.9.
 
Q1: What is the best way to do it going from 5.4 to 5.6 and from 5.6 to
5.9 OR I can do it from 5.4 to 5.9 direct OR remove the old OSIS 5.4 and
install OSIS 5.9?
 
Q2: Can I do the upgrade multi user mode or I need to do it single user
mode "I am running sendmail"?
