Solaris 7 traceroute issue

I am seeng a strange behavior on an E450 running Solaris 7where udp traceroute
to the server are not working at all, if I specifiy the -I (for ICMP) option
the traceroute works fine. The traceroute doesn't work from other servers on
the same subnet. I opened a case with Sun and all they can tell me is they
have had other people with the same problem and the workaround is to use the
-I flag (which does work as I mentioned above) and the solution is to upgrade
to Solaris 8. They had no explanation of why it did not work on this one
server but did on several other servers running Solaris 7 and could not
provide any informaiton on a patch that would fix it.

A search of the archives yields someone else who had the same problem but no
response or summary:

When attempting to run a traceroute against a sun workstation running
Solaris 2.7, I get no ICMP responses
from the traceroute (UDP) and it eventually times out. The traceroute
works if I use the "-I" option which uses pure ICMP instead of UDP. I
believe this may be a patch issue seeing as I do not have this problem on
other
Solaris 2.7 systems running a higher revision of the OS. I have searched
far and wide but I'm unable to
come up with any documentation relating to this issue.

Any help on this issue would be appreciated.

As it happens I will be rebuilding this server with Solaris 8 soon but I am
curious if anyone has any ideas about this issue?

Curious Kenny
