Question on tar

Dear SUN Experts,

Sorry to burden you with such a simple question, but how does one indicate the restore of a single file from a tar tape archive to a location different from which it originated? According to the man pages, all I have to do is submit the 'tar xvf /dev/rmt/0 /path_on_tape/filename' command from the directory in which I would like the file to be written. I tried this once, and it overwrote the files in the original location (/path_on_tape) rather than creating them in my current directory. I thought that at one revision of Solaris that there was an option 'R' which told tar to ignore leading slashes, but on Solaris 7 that switch is not valid.

Thanks for your help,
Joanna Sizemore
