NIS master/slave just 'disappear'

SO -- for the past couple of weeks my NIS master and slave will just
randomly "go away" -- as an example, last night at around 3:35 they
both just suddenly started reporting that the NIS server for our
domain had stopped responding:

master:
Apr 6 03:34:26 neith ypbind[14835]: [ID 337329 daemon.error] NIS server not responding for domain "si.amr"; still trying

slave:
Apr 6 03:35:04 kupala ypbind[27415]: [ID 337329 daemon.error] NIS server not responding for domain "si.amr"; still trying

they both started new message files as soon as ypbind started failing
-- have NO clue if that's useful information, just information -- they
will work just fine for weeks, sometimes one fails, occasionally they
both fail at around the same time

(was going to go accuse the network team of doing bad things, but the
'only one fails' issues convinced me it wasn't them.... guess I'll
have to make up other things to pin on them)

specifics of the system:

15k domain with 12 processors and 24 Gig of RAM -- dual pathed SAN
disk and IPMPed network ports on redundant QFEs (both master and slave)

Solaris 8 2/02 install
Solaris 8 Recommended Patch Cluster from March 20th, 2003
J2SE Solaris 8 Recommended Patch Cluster from March 20th, 2003

(we're a dev house, so we only do Patch Clusters so that we have a
somewhat normal 'minimum' patch level -- obviously I can patch stuff
if it's needed, just haven't needed to go outside the Cluster so far...)

# cat /var/yp/securenets
255.255.255.128 10.117.2.128

there are some sporadic errors in the messages file that look like:
Apr 4 15:00:00 neith ypserv[26919]: [ID 942997 user.error] dev udp open failed

but they are usually not around when the servers fail, so again, it
may be useful information, or it just may be information....

any thoughts/assistance are (as always) appreciated --

will (of course) summarize
