I haven't had any replies to this but after reporting the problem
to Sun UK some days ago, asking the questions below
on Sunmanagers only recently and tearing my hair out,
I have managed to fix the problem.
Below, is an expurgated version of my email to Sun:
You will probably be pleased to know that I've fixed this problem.
In /etc/dt/config I found I file dated Mar 25 16:19 named Xservers.
In that file there is the line
:0 Local local_uid@console root /usr/openwin/bin/Xsun :0 -nobanner
+kb
I checked on other Solaris 9 systems and found that I didn't have this
file
and infact the /usr/dt/config/Xservers file has the line:
:0 Local local_uid@console root /usr/openwin/bin/Xsun :0 -nobanner
which I assume is the default? I don't really know too much about X.
However, I decided to rename /etc/dt/config/Xservers to
/etc/dt/config/Xservers.old
and reboot. Hey presto, keyboard is now o.k.
I cannot be sure whether the Gnome installation created this or whether
I did by clicking a button, but it was around the time I installed Gnome
2.

Hi,
Perhaps somewhat foolishly, I installed Sun's version of
Gnome 2 on my Blade 100 workstation last week. I decided
that I would take a look at this later and switched back to CDE,
but now find that I have keyboard problems - notably I cannot
type the tilde or hash character and that keys which repeated
no longer do so. I'm using a type 6 USB keyboard (UK).
Can anyone advise me how to get the default behaviour back?
I don't feel that I should start fiddling around modifying key
mappings. I've just go this idea that the Gnome installation
has tweaked one or more files at the system level, which are
common to other desktops. I can still type the characters at the
command line prompt, but not in any desktop application.
Thanks
Ray
