Gnome messed up my keyboard

Hi,

Perhaps somewhat foolishly, I installed Sun's version of
Gnome 2 on my Blade 100 workstation last week. I decided
that I would take a look at this later and switched back to CDE,
but now find that I have keyboard problems - notably I cannot
type the tilde or hash character and that keys which repeated
no longer do so. I'm using a type 6 USB keyboard (UK).

Can anyone advise me how to get the default behaviour back?
I don't feel that I should start fiddling around modifying key
mappings. I've just go this idea that the Gnome installation
has tweaked one or more files at the system level, which are
common to other desktops. I can still type the characters at the
command line prompt, but not in any desktop application.

Thanks

Ray
