Backup active files-Snapshot or other options?

hi,

We have an application whose processes writes into data
files in a filesystem. This processes are always active and
running, so files backuped in it are not valid from the
application point of view.

I am trying to figure out a solution, on getting a clean
backup of the filesystem. One option is to shutdown the
processes for a short while, take a snapshot of the filesystem
and then start the processes again; then, take the backup of
the snapshot. Is anybody doing something similar? can you
please list the commands, reliability and any other details for
implementing this. Any other suggestions are welcome.

thanks!
Styro
