Triple Mirror Backup Advice, incl. how can a script find out SDS status (non-interactive metastat?)

I am planning to implement a triple-mirror system for online backup
purposes. To this end I have read
http://docs.sun.com/db/doc/806-6111/6jf2ve3g7?a=view on Using a
Mirror to Back up Data.

The first line in this worries me however -
1) Run the metastat command to make sure the mirror is in the Okay
state.

-Well obviously if I wanted to make a backup in the middle of the day
this would be straightforward. However this is not an option as our
Progress databases have to be shut down before breaking the mirror (so
the backup must be done after 1am).

How can I get this information into a script? - ie is there a
non-interactive metastat-equivalent; or can I use perl awk sed etc. to
parse the metastat output - bearing in mind there are several
partitions, only a few of which I want to backup this way.

Any advice would be appreciated and I will summarise my results.

BTW I am using Solaris 8 on an E3500, the disks are on a SAN hanging
off 2 QL3200 HBAs.

Thanks
Matt
