I gto up in the detail there. My original question is
shoudl I try to use NIS+ in NIS compatibility mode
or just use plain old not as secure NIS keeping in mind
that I have many RedHat Linux 8.0 and 7.X clients to keep
happy.

Thanks,

Subject: NIS+ w/NIS comp vs. NIS

Hi folks,

I've been out of the NIS game for awhile so I wanted to
run something by you all. We have several Solaris 8 servers
deployed with a boatload of RedHat Linux 7 and 8. We
presently do not have NIS or NIS+ deployed. I want to
remedy that. My only NIS+ experience is a painful
memory of being on 1-800 USA-4SUN for every single thing
I did with NIS+ because I could never get the command options
straight in my head. But I'm willing to give it another go
if you folks think it is worth it.

I am planning on having several NIS+ servers in NIS compatibility
mode (so that the NIS-only Redhat Linux clients can play. Any
thoughts/experiences that you have on this I would appreciate.

Also, my other concern is that I have several networks. I am
aware that (atleast a few years ago) I need a NIS server per subnet.
However I do not have enough Solaris boxes to go around, so
has anyone tried using RedHat Linux 8.0 as a NIS+/NIS slave server?
Or should I invest in extra NIC cards for my Solaris 8 servers so
that they can serve on these other networks?

Thanks,

         Ed
