can't get NIS working...

Hello,
    I have just set up a NIS master (with no slaves) on a debian box in
my house. I have also set the same machine to point to 127.0.0.1 for
it's NIS server, and this appears to work fine.

However, i would like to get my Solaris 8 box to use this NIS server
also, but i don't seem to be able to. here is what i'm trying:

====================================================================

# /usr/sbin/ypinit -c

In order for NIS to operate sucessfully, we have to construct a list of
the NIS servers. Please continue to add the names for YP servers in
order of preference, one per line. When you are done with the list,
type a <control D> or a return on a line by itself.
 next host to add: turnip
 next host to add: ^D
The current list of yp servers looks like this:

turnip

Is this correct? [y/n: y] y
# domainname
hobbs
# ypcat passwd
can't communicate with ypbind
#

====================================================================

"turnip" is my debian NIS server.
"eMonster" is my Solaris box (the one on which i'm typing these cmds).
"hobbs" is the domainname both machines are using:

====================================================================

turnip:~# domainname
hobbs
turnip:~#

eMonster# domainname
hobbs
eMonster#

====================================================================

I know there are several other files that could be involved, so if yo
would like me to copy any of the config files, please let me know and
i'll attach them as needed.

Thanks,
Richard.
