NFS problems

Hi there,
I am no expert on NFS so please excuse any obvious errors in this post.

We have an NFS server running Redhat Linux 7.2
The server is attached to the LAN via FDDI.
My client is a Solaris 2.8 box connected to the LAN
via 10Mb Ethernet.

I am creating a file in an NFS mounted dir on my Solaris
client.
dd if=/dev/zero of=/home/lnxtst/testfile bs=8k count=16384

When I run snoop rpc nfs,
I am seeing this loads of the following:
     solc -> lnxserv UDP IP fragment ID=63757 Offset=0 MF=1
     solc -> lnxserv UDP IP fragment ID=63758 Offset=0 MF=1
     solc -> lnxserv UDP IP fragment ID=63759 Offset=0 MF=1
     solc -> lnxserv UDP IP fragment ID=63760 Offset=0 MF=1
     solc -> lnxserv UDP IP fragment ID=63761 Offset=0 MF=1
     solc -> lnxserv UDP IP fragment ID=63762 Offset=0 MF=1
     solc -> lnxserv UDP IP fragment ID=63763 Offset=0 MF=1
     solc -> lnxserv UDP IP fragment ID=63764 Offset=0 MF=1

Our network is being flooded with retransmissions between these two boxes.

The MTU on the Soalris client is 1500
The MTU on the Linux NFS server is 4470

My understanding is that the data should only be fragmented if the MTU that
the data was going to was smaller than the source MTU !!!

So why is the data being fragmented ?

Thanks a lot for any insight/info etc.
