installing gnome2 as non-root in /usr/local

I just got gnome2 from sun's web site (gnome-2_0-fcs-solaris8-sparc.tar.gz)

Is there a reasonable way to install in
        /usr/local/gnome-2.0
instead of
        /usr

I also want to install as non-root (I hate doing things as root
on machines other people use...)

Or do I need to just build source from scratch?
