Documenting Disksuite

(Re-Post, as I think something went wrong when I tried it for the first
time yesterday.)

Hi everyone!

I, along with my clients, feel permanently uncomfortable about those
Disksuite installations that have grown over time. I'm talking about
mirrors that were taken down because of disk space needs, then were
mirrored again to a new disk, two concatenated small slices mirrored onto
a large slice on a large disk, and so on.

How do you document this kind of stuff? On HP-UX and AIX, everything ist
pretty straightforward: You just dump new disks into a volume group, and
as long as you keep minimal track of your disks (on which controller and
in which volume group they are), you're fairly certain about what you're
doing. On Solaris with Disksuite it's a lot more complicated. You have to
keep track of controllers, disks, the slices on them, the slices that form
a metadevice, the way the metadevice is created, the filesystem on top of
the metadevice, state database replicas and so on...

How do I keep track of this without bordering on insanity everytime I have
to make the smallest modification to a metadevice? I have worked on AIX
installations with several dozens of disks, but those little E450's make
me lose my mind, even though I've never done anything beyond concatenating
and mirroring.

Please grant me a look into the documentation of your Disksuite
installations. :-)

Thanks everyone,

-martin
