Sunfire 280 console problem

I have one Sunfire 280R that 'had' the "system fault" amber led lite.
Our consoles are connected up via some terminal-console-servers that are
more often broken that working.
Found a free port and cabled it up, couldn't get any response from the
keyboard so I powered off/on the server via the front power button. Started
getting messages on the virtual console, until it got stuck on fsck and
wanted a Ctrl-D or a password. Couldn't get it to take any input from the
keyboard. Tried a couple more times, I can get messages on the display but
no input accepted.
Must be the connector or the cable I figured. I tried 3 sets of
cables/connectors and none work in this server but they all work in other
280R's. After pulling the power cables in the back, I got the "system fault"
off but I'm still stuck on the "console displays messages but won't accept
input" problem.
Only thing I can figure is Serial-A port went bad. Does this happen ?
