server sizing for Oracle

We've got an Oracle upgrade project in the works, to migrate some
apps to Oracle Applications 11i, with Oracle 9.2.mumble (probably,
the DBAs may stick with 8.1.7.4) on the back end. I've got the
Oracle-generated technical assessment, and its recommendations on
servers (type, number of CPUs, memory), but I'd like to hear more
from the Sun admin side.

If you've got this type of thing (Oracle + Oracle Applications)
running, and got sizing guidance from Oracle, how close were they to
what you actually put in place? How much over-capacity did you find
Oracle called for?

Or, if you just happen to have Oracle+Applications running, what kind
of systems are you using? How much load (components and users) do you
have, and how is everything performing?

We're going with a 2-tier design, probably one DB server with 2 or 3
app/web servers in front of it. Total users are expected to be 800 or
so direct users, and another 250 web interface users (not
simultaneous!), and Oracle originally said we needed V880s in front
and a Sunfire 4800 or better on the back end!

They revised that downward, and I'm comparing it to older versions of
Oracle 8i applications, etc., on E450/5000-generation hardware, that
I've admin'd. I think I've got more realistic hardware requirements
now, but let's see what others have to say!
