Thanks to everyone that replied.

I ended up using a boot server and booted the X1 of it into sigle user mode.

Edited /etc/shadow password file and off I went.

Also, even though the boot server is a Netra T1 (U160 scsi disks) the nics and
switches all run on 100 full duplex the through put seemed rather slow when I
went to reinstall the X1 a day or so ago. I am talking 0.5MB per second and
slower.

I did see an email a few days ago with regards to slow performace in network
installs? (I am not sure if it was with regards to net installs).

Yet now that the X1 is up and running with Solaris 9 and samba the performace
is just fine at about 9 MB per second to and from the machine. Ftp transfers
are
even faster at times.
