Solaris 8 on Compaq ML370

I've got two strange problems with Solaris 8 on a new Compaq Proliant ML370

1) When typing at the prompt, the system will periodically hang for 7 - 10
seconds. It then catches up quickly by displaying the characters that were
typed while the system was paused. I've installed a new CPQncr.2 patch, but
no luck. I've got another ML370 machine that is a year or two older that runs
Solaris 8 just fine. I don't think the problem happens when using the system
console. But, I'm not 100% sure about this.

2) The second problem deals with an exabyte tape drive. Solaris won't boot if
there is a tape in the tape drive. When a tape is in the tape drive, Solaris
goes into the Hardware Configuration Screen. If I hit F2 Continue key, the
system tries to go to the tape drive to load the drivers. If no tape is in
the drive, F2 shows the hardware list and loads the drivers just fine. If I
hit esc when prompted if new hardware has been added, (as opposed to the
system going into the Hardware Conf Screen because a tape is in the tape
drive) the F2 continue key shows the list and the drivers load fine.

I've checked the cmos to be sure that it isn't trying to boot from the tape
and I also verified that there isn't a SCSI ID conflict.

I removed the Exabyte tape drive and did a reconfigure boot to see if the tape
drive was causing my pausing problem. But it didn't fix it.

Any ideas on either of these two problems?

Thanks,

John
