here's the instance error log entries:

so
a truss indicates the problem starts when /dev/zero
can't be accessed. the file is linked to devices
properly with correct ownership as root:other.
using several different jdk versions does not work.
installing a new web server, in a new directory,
results in the same errors.
any ideas are greatly appreciated.
