login file for sh

Hi,

I am running Solaris 8 on sparc machines. The root shell in
/etc/passwd is: /sbin/sh
I have created a .profile file in /

But when I su from another user to root, or even ssh into
the box as root, it looks like the .profile file has not
been read nor has /etc/profile, because the PATH is only
/usr/sbin and /bin.
How can I make it read the .profile file. I've read man sh,
and it says it reads the .profile file.
This is quite peculiar. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.
Radhika
