FTP and Solaris 8

Sun managers:
First, let me state that I have searched diligently for an answer to this,
including the archives for this list and nothing seems to address this
problem. I say that knowing that I'll (hopefully) be bombarded with
responses to what should be a simple thing that everybody else figured out
long ago. I recently upgraded to Solaris 8 (from 7) on an E250. I
discovered that I couldn't seem to ftp to it; got this message no matter
what:
220 charlotte FTP server (SunOS 5.8) ready.
Name (207.100.81.31:root): root
331 Password required for root.
Password:
530 Login incorrect.
Login failed.
but I was in a hurry and just went the other way to the other machine
(solaris 7, no problem)
I forgot about it until rtoday when I heard from someone else that they
couldn't ftp to another machine recently upgraded to Solaris 8. I've been
using SunOS since 4.x something and I never had to do anything to a machine
to use a straight ftp from a machine on the same subnet but nothing seems to
work on these two machines. I found some stuff about /etc/shells and
/etc/ftpusers but I've only used /etc/shells to restrict ftp and never on
any machine as a standard and I've pretty puzzled about this. I even read
the (gasp!) docs at Sun to see if it was something new to 8 but I didn't
find anything. I've probably set up and worked on 100's of Sun's over the
years and this is just a little embarrassing. Soon they'll discover that I
have no idea what's wrong and I'm counting on you to save me from that.

Thanks, as always

Candie
