Thanks to all who made responses. John ? had the most effective
suggestion. I have no problems building against db 3.3.11 and no
requirements for the 4.x version so I'm good to go with that combo.

Use Berkeley DB 3.X 4 is not supported under sendmail yet.
It 'may' work if you dork with it, but why bother.
