How to ascertain whether a particular process is still active and accessing the opened files

Hello Gurus;

Need a little help.

I have a system which has quite some LUNS (From Hitachi storage) attached to
it via Brocade switches.

Systems and applications are working fine but once in a while, one of the
programs does not seemd to function properly.

We think we know what the problem is but need a little help in tracking it..

The process has opened files on one of them Hitachi LUNS. Sometimes the
program simply goes into a loop and does not access the opened files.

I need to be alerted when this happened....how should I go about it...?

I should be able to use pfiles to ascertain the opened files associated with a
particular process, but what I actually require is whether there is any I/Os
going through those opened files....

We know the process is active and not sleeping but we want to be alerted when
it goes into an infinite loop and not access the files it's suppose to
access...

Any ideas?

Best Regards
