set/export in borne shell

Hi Everyone,

I am running Solaris 7 x86 on my Compaq 735CA laptop.

The following command-lines seems don't work in sh:
#set a "c"
#export a

then I use echo to check a, but there is nothing there:
#echo $a
<empty line>

The export and echo works fine for PATH:
#export
export PATH
export a
#echo $PATH
PATH=/usr/sbin:/usr/bin

I need to define an environment variable in XF86 startx script and make it
available for everybody later. I can't use csh/ksh in this case since startx
use borne shell.

Highly appreciate any suggestion!
-Zimmer
