critical situation

One of our servers was rebooted for maintenance reasons and it went into a single user maintenance mode. The error message that we are gettting is the /etc/vfstab has too many entries for each of the partition. I logged into the console and tried to edit the /etc/vfstab file and I couldn't. It tells me " /var/tmp no such file exists". How do I edit the /etc/vfstab file so that I can safely reboot the machine. Your replies would be greatly appreciated. Thanks much
