getting around automount line length limit

We have users distributed across several volumes that we want to automount
ie
/fs/homes1/jdoe
/fs/homes1/jsmith
/fs/homes2/aralph
/fs/homes2/bladen

Were they all under homes1, it would be a single entry in the map but because
of >1 homes and we want it to always appear as /fs/homes/user, we'd like to
put in one entry per user.
Right now, we have a wrapped line that exceeds automount limits (apparently
4095 characters) ie

homes \
/jdoe server:/export/homes1/jdoe \
/jsmith server:/export/homes1/jsmith \
/aralph server:/export/homes2/aralph \
/bladen server:/export/homes2/bladen ...

Is there a way around this limit?

Thanks
