CDE/OpenWin not starting

I have an E450 in a remote facility that was working fine, but now I can
only use a command line login from the attached keyboard/monitor. If I
attempt to start an openwin or CDE session, after I log in the screen goes
black and the session hangs. I have to kill the underlying processes to
get back to a login prompt.

The following error is generated in .dt/errorlog:

dtsession: Unable to start message server - exiting.

Google/archive search suggests two causes for this message: either the
server is confused about it's identity (/etc/hosts, /etc/nodename, etc...)
or the file system the .dt directory resides on is not writeable (i.e. disk
full). Neither of these is true in my case.

CDE was working fine the last time I was on site (July). Nothing related
to CDE was intentionally changed, no patches have been added to the system.
What else would be causing this error message?

>From the console, attempting to open a remote session also fails.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Will summarize, but not until after
my next site visit (mid November)
