Sun Managers,

We came across an unusual error today and I wonder if any of you have any
insight into it.
We were trying to read a CDROM on our CD2Plus CD Reader. (Yes that is the 4x
reader manufactured in 1994/1995). Old I know. The CD produced the following
errors on read.

Sep 17 13:22:28 robert unix: WARNING:
/iommu@f,e0000000/sbus@f,e0001000/espdma@f,400000/esp@f,800000/sd@6,0 (sd6):
Sep 17 13:22:28 robert ^IError for Command: read(10) Error
Level: Retryable
Sep 17 13:22:28 robert unix: ^IRequested Block: 135428
Error Block: 135428
Sep 17 13:22:28 robert unix: ^IVendor: TOSHIBA
Serial Number: 02/18/94
Sep 17 13:22:28 robert unix: ^ISense Key: Media Error
Sep 17 13:22:28 robert unix: ^IASC: 0x11 (<vendor unique code 0x11>), ASCQ:
0x5, FRU: 0x0

The error repeated many times at different blocks.

We tried about 8 different CD readers. two of them would read the disk
correctly without any errors, the other 6 logged errors as above. The block
differed between reads.

The CD in question is a Verbatim 32x 80min/700MB cd with about 300MB of data
on it.
I copied the CD with NERO Burn and my Yamaha CDWriter in my PC to a 16x
72min/650MB CD. This exact copy of the original would work in any CD Reader
we have. Incidently, I know that the original was written at 4x.
According to the Sun Handbook documentation, the Sun 2Plus CDROM is a
Toshiba XM-4101B.
Anyone experienced this before? Do you think I am correct in my theory that
the newer, faster media is incompatible with the older drives? Anyone have
any experience with what can be done to alleviate the problem or some
solution. I can't run to 8 different readers and see if a CD is good/bad. It
needs to work everywhere.

Thanks for any input.
