memory upgrade problems on Sun AXI 300

Hello,

I have an AXi system that shipped with 128Mb ram (64Mb 168 bit dimms x
2) and I needed to up the memory on this system. I made a purchase
from eBay for a 256Mb upgrade kit. The kit consisted of (2) 128Mb 168
bit dimms.

After installing the dimms and powering on the system, the OBP reported
320Mb of ram where I was expecting 384. 384-320=64 - Using this logic,
even though it didn't make sense, I figured I must have done something
to one of my original 64 Mb dimms. I re-opened the case and reseated
all of the memory then re-booted. Still 320Mb ram.

Approaching this from the operating system, I ran a utility called
memconf that I found here:

<http://www.webpak.net/~tschmidt/unix.html>

memconf reported this:

=======================================================

sun# memconf
hostname: sun
SPARCengine(tm)Ultra(tm) AXi (UltraSPARC-IIi 300MHz)
socket U0404 has a 32MB DIMM
socket U0403 has a 32MB DIMM
socket U0402 has a 128MB DIMM
socket U0401 has a 128MB DIMM
empty sockets: U0304 U0303 U0302 U0301
total memory = 320MB
sun#

=======================================================

The system is now seeing my (2) original 64Mb dimms as 32Mb dimms. The
manual that came with my AXi system does not go very deep into memory
other than identifying memory banks 0,1,2,3.

Can anyone explain to me what I have done to my system?? Other than
only reporting 320Mb ram, everything appears to be working normally.

Thanks,

Jerry
