ls won't work after volume filled to 100%

Solaris 2.7 on Sun Ultra2.

I have a volume /backup that held tar'd backup files. Bad command caused
it to fill the volume to 101% before it paniced. The volume is mounted
on it's own slice, c0t0d1s7, of a shared disk with / at c0t0d1s6. "ls"
stopped working. I cleared the offensively large usr.tar.gz file but
"ls" is still unhappy. fsck'd and all that, but no help. "truss ls"
chows that ioctl() errors with EINVAR and ESPIPE and one or two others,
where should I be looking to solve this one??
