Can't log in as root: Segmentation Fault

Hi gurus,

I got a SunFire 280R running Solaris 8 and each time I do a su - to become
root, it gives me "Segmentation Fault" but it doesn't create a core and the
machine doesn't reboot, it stays up and running. I've looked into the
/etc/passwd file and the line corresponding to root seems to be okay since
the shell is /sbin/sh

root:x:0:1:Super-User:/:/sbin/sh

I haven't seen any strange character in this file (editing with vi and doing
:set list)

Can anybody help me out?

Thanks in advance and regards.
