Catch 22 with DiskSuite 4.2.1/4.2 Hitachi SAN and soft partitions

I have a 280 attached to a Hitachi SAN with 6 LUNs that I would like to stripe
and then soft partition (I need smaller sizes than the size of the LUNs I was assigned).

Here are the problems:

The hitachi "drives" were not unqiuely identifable by SDS 4.2.1, and you get a overlapping device error - various posts mention a tool rwdevid that will create unique ids for each drive. I emailed someone who had posted specifically about the hitachi, he reply graciously and said that the tool did _not_ work but that SDS 4.2 did.

So I installed SDS 4.2 and was able to build a metadevice without an error:

metastat d65
d65: Concat/Stripe
    Size: 341396640 blocks
    Stripe 0: (interlace: 1024 blocks)
        Device Start Block Dbase
        c3t0d1s4 0 No
        c3t0d2s4 0 No
        c3t0d3s4 0 No
        c4t0d1s4 0 No
        c4t0d2s4 0 No
        c4t0d3s4 0 No

the problem is when I run 4.2.1 metainit (because 4.2 metainit says "-p": illegal option) to try to layer a soft partition on top of the stripe dev, I get an invalid unit error:
metainit d96 -p d65 3g
metainit: sf-por-syb4-new: d65: invalid unit

Am I at an impasse and stuck with being an invalid unit and turning to veritas?
I had hoped to avoid using both SDS and VxVM and I think SDS alone would work great for what I want to do, but I don't think it possible given the id bug in 4.2.1

Thanks for any help,

Rob "invalid unit"
