SOLUTION: Solaris 10 Volume Manager hosed

Hi all

Problem solved. This is what was needed:

I rebooted with reconfiguration (boot -r). This recreated the
/devices/pseudo/md@0:admin "file" (and probably the /dev/md/admin link to it).
This fixed the problem running the "meta" commands and allowed me to
re-establish the logical devices and mirrors.

I still don't know what causes the reconfiguration to create the
/devices/pseudo/md@0:admin file but suspect the /kernel/drv/md.conf file is
what does it. You might need to copy the /kernel/drv/md.conf file from
another machine (with appropriate editing) or re-install the SUNWmdr package
to get a clean one

Hope this is of help to somebody elsewhere sometime.

Regards,
        Tom

my Sun Fire V240 systems. Volume Manager was working fine, with a simple set
of mirrored filesystems, including root (two physical disks). It had
developed a fault that I was trying to fix. I've got the system going using
'normal' disk devices on one disk, but /devices/pseudo/md@0:admin no longer
exists on either disk.

was read-only. At the next opportunity (tomorrow morning), I'm going to try a
'boot -r', having reinstalled the SUNWmdr package.

/kernel/drv/md.conf file exists, but all it contains is a comment that its
contents are now obsolete and don't do anything.

what packages constitute Volume Manager? I've found SUNWmdr, SUNWmdu,
SUNWmdar, SUNWmau. Any others?
