I have a headless SunFire V240 ( no graphics card installed). I had this very
same error and behavior. After working with Sun I came across a blog that
gave me what I was looking for. The blog is at:

I had to edit the /usr/dt/config/Xservers file. I commented out the entry on
the bottom and entered this one.
# :0 Local local_uid@console root /usr/X11/bin/Xserver :0 -nobanner
:0 Local local_uid@none root /usr/openwin/bin/Xvfb :0 -nobanner -dev vfb
screen 0 1024x768x32
It was also necessary for me to run # netservices open as I had them in
limited. I can now use XDMCP, Xnest, and Xwin32 to connect.
