Can't receive mail to root at local machine

I'm running sendmail 8.12.10 on Solaris 9.
In my /etc/aliases file I have root defined to go to my email address.
When I send mail to root@hostname it sends it to
my mail servers root mail account that is nfs mounted on /var/mail
instead of looking at my /etc/aliases file and sending root's mail
to the email address I have defined for root.
I'm not running the sendmail daemons and would prefer not to.
I thought this used to work.
I have my sendmail.cf and submit.cf this way

# "Smart" relay host (may be null)
DSmailhost

I send send mail out from this machine and also can send
mail to other aliases that I have defined in my /etc/aliases
file but not to root itself.

Any help would be great.
