Installing Solaris 10 nv77 x86 on Dell XPS-720: "No drives found".... nv_sataX attach failed.

Hi:

I posted the following on OpenSolaris.Org, but for an expanded look,

I'm reaching out to my friends on SunManagers to see if anyone has

any suggestions. Thank you for looking below.

Hello:

Here is the latest incarnation of this problem (I'm experiencing today).
My system is a Dell XPS 720. The following hardware is attached to it:

- 4 internal SATA drives (managed by the system BIOS *not* the RAID
controller BIOS. i.e. I'm not doing any RAID so I don't use it).

- 2 external SATA drives, daisy chained, and attached to the system via
its single FireWire port.
(Note: I don't need Solaris to see the external FireWire attached drives)

- 3 DVD/CD optical drives, all internally connected.
> PBDS DVD+-RW DH-16W1S
> NEC DVD_RW ND-3520A
> NEC DVD_RW ND-3520A

The Solaris install DVD (not CD) media, nv77x86, does not detect any of the
4 internal SATA drives. As suggested previously, I have done the following:

(1) Ensured that DVD optical drives are first to boot from via BIOS
settings.
(2) Tried to install Solaris nv77 from the PBDS and NEC DVD drives.
(3) Started the install from a powered-on cold booted the system.

Unfortunately, during the "Configuring devices phase" I get the following
message:

WARNING: attached failed: RAID mode not supported
nv_sata0 attach failed. <-- sata0
WARNING: attached failed: RAID mode not supported
nv_sata1 attach failed. <-- sata1
WARNING: attached failed: RAID mode not supported
nv_sata2 attach failed. <-- sata2

WARNING: attached failed: RAID mode not supported
nv_sata0 attach failed. <-- sata0
WARNING: attached failed: RAID mode not supported
nv_sata1 attach failed. <-- sata1
WARNING: attached failed: RAID mode not supported
nv_sata2 attach failed. <-- sata2

Not sure if the six messages above translate to the 6 attached
drives, or to 3 of the 4 internal SATA drives (in which case you would
wonder where it the message for the 4th SATA drive). This is just
an observation.

Anyway, the problem is that when I get past the "System Identification
Complete" stage and onto the installation GUI, I get a "No disks found"
error. When I drop down to the shell and inspect the /dev/(r)dsk
directories, run "cfgadm/devfsadm", no luck.

Is there a BIOS setting that should check for. Remember that NONE of the
drives are under the control of the RAID controller. I tried that too, just
in
case you were wondering.

Need HELP. Thank you in advance.

P.S.:

Note that the exact same error messages (and number of them) occurs whether
or not the FireWire cable that attaches the two (daisy chained) SATA drives
is
connected. So the FireWire connection has nothing to do with the problem.

However, when I change the cabling configuration such that each of the two
external SATA drives is connected via two USB cables (instead of through
FireWire), then Solaris see those two external drives -- but still does not
see
and of the four internal SATA drives.

So it seems the problem isn't necessarily with use of SATA drives, as it is
with
using directly connected SATA drives, since SATA drives connected through a
USB interface works.

So my problem remains, since I do need to install Solaris on one of the
internally
*directly* connected SATA drives. TIA again.
