fsck: Irreparable Cylinder Group Header Problem

OS - Solaris 8.

We have one particular server that keeps giving exhibiting this problem,
on the reboot the fsck pass fails and upon manual initiation throws out
a chunk of errors ultimately ending with Irreparable Cylinder Group
Header Problem and the fsck fails.

Having search on Google the only possible fix I could find was that
someone removed a ufs utilities patch and the older version of fsck ran
through. I think that was a later version of Solaris but a bit of a hunt
and I found the ufs utilities patch on Solaris 8. Unfortunately the
filesystem I can't mount read/write is /var ( I guess that is what makes
my patchrm hang. So for now I will newfs and restore again from backup.

Has anyone else come across this and found a way out?

Our patch cluster is a little out of date and there is one newer version
of the ufs utilities patch but the fixed problems don't read like this
one.

Cheers

Scott
