Backups - How do you do yours ??

Hi all

This a question about backup solutions, I would be really interested to
hear about the products you use and the experiences you've had with
backing up your data centers

Our DC consists of around 1000 boxes. Rather crudely at the moment we
currently have an LTO tape drive attached to every twentieth server,
This server has a dual responsibility as a production box and as a
backup server for itself and the previous nineteen boxes. It has a shell
script that runs at midnight which sequentially goes off to each one of
the nineteen boxes it backs up in turn (and itself) and runs a remote
ufsdump to pull the data over the network to its local tape drive...

Due to short backup windows (around 7 hours) and the sheer amount of
data on each box (between 10gb and 300gb per box), this was the most
cost effective and manageable solution we could think of that would
work. A single large backup server wont do, as even with a fat
multilinked connection to the switch, we just couldn't get that amount
of data to the tapes quickly enough (we absolutely cannot overflow into
the start of the business day)

There are obvious disadvantages to the method we use at the moment, most
notably the man hours required to manage 50 LTO tape drives scattered
around the DC, 50 backup scripts running on 50 backup servers and of
course the crudeness of sequential ufsdump.

We are introducing new servers to our DC all the time and this once
manageable backup system is fast becoming a full time job. I would love
to hear how you guys do yours

Cheers
Gary
