installing a chat client on Solaris 9

Sirs

I have been trying to get an instant messaging capability to work on a
collection of Solaris 9 Sparc workstations and servers. The network is
completely stand alone and other than some various subnets, has no
direct connection to anything else. I am running NIS and do have DNS
working. I have installed the Openfire server software on a Solaris 10
workstation and have been able to use the GAIM client that is native to
the Solaris 10 to perform some minor chat capability on two Solaris 10
workstations.
I have downloaded the source for the GAIM client, now called pidgin, but
have been unable to get it to compile on the Solaris 9 system. The
configure script says that it needs a libxml version that does not seem
to be available for Solaris 9.
I have installed the mozilla 1.7.12 package on the Solaris 9 systems and
have tried several times to get the built in chatzilla to talk to the
openfire server. While it does seem to know the server is there, it
does not ever seem to connect. The chatzilla is an IRC client and the
Openfire server is says that it supports IRC.
I have looked at the Sun Java Communications Suite 5 software, but it
seems to be a whole lot more than I really need, just a simple chat
capability between some workstations.

I would certainly appreciate any advice or suggestions with regards to
setting up an instant messaging capability on the Solaris 9 systems.

Thanks in advance and I will summarize the results.
