Network failover Preferenes

Guys i just been asked a question by someone who is changing a data
center and putting resilient kit in. They asked the best way to do network
multipathing for the servers. I thought straight away just using mpathd
which an official way of failover networking in Solaris.

Problem is it needs 3 ip addresses which per server will just start
eating up ranges real quickly. Especially if some servers need multiple
live interfaces and therefore 3 address per real failover address.

So i wondered what do people do and also would it work to use the same 2
addresses on each server which shouldn't route out and just change the
real failover address per server. Would that cause any problems?

e.g

Server1

bge0 10.10.10.1
bge1 10.10.10.2
Real ip 10.10.10.20

Server2

bge0 10.10.10.1
bge1 10.10.10.2
Real ip 10.10.10.21

Is this possible?
