usernames > 8 characters

Hello Sunmanagers,

I was going through the archives to see if anyone had asked whether
Solaris supports long usernames (greater than 8 characters). Sure
enough, I found a post from 2001 addressing the topic, and the summary
was that although it is not officially supported, Solaris can handle
long usernames with the caveat that commands may not function properly,
and could even result in buffer overflows.

My question is: is this still the case in Solaris 10? I see that
attempting to run `useradd` with a username longer than 8 characters
still results in the usual "name too long" error. So I take it long
usernames are still not supported? Has anyone had experience with long
usernames in Solaris 9 or 10?

Thanks,

Eddy
