Derek ...absolutely spot on, my hosts file on the master system had lost
its link to /etc/inet/hosts (the system and netmasks files were ok)
I re-linked, re-flarcreated and re-cloned and everything is working fine
Damn I love this list :-)

This sounds liek the link between /etc/hosts and /etc/inet/hosts may be
broken.
ls -l /etc/hosts should show a link to inet/hosts
Likewise netmasks should point to inet/netmasks, ditto services.
